the first answer is about using less or conservation. this is without doubt the most effective way to reduce energy use since you are simply using less. this, for a lot of people though means doing without some of the things they are comfortable with. while the adjustment isn't as painful as a lot of people think, they fear of doing without makes them slow to act.

for them, the other method - energy efficiency - is the answer to saving energy. driving a hybrid car or using more efficient light bulbs means they can still do the same things like drive and keep the lights on but the efficiency means they use less energy to produce the same result.

maybe the best way to save energy is to use sources that are limitless like solar, wind or tidal power. while these sources are not as cheap and efficient as fossil fuels, this is changing as the costs and effort to find, mine and transport oil, coal and natural gas increase at the same time that the prices for alternative are coming down and the efficiency going up.

A few ways you can save energy around the home are;

Installing CFLs in your home can reduce your annual electricity bill by 14% and last 6 to 8 times longer than incandescent bulbs. They are now widely available in many styles and designs for as low as $1.50 a bulb.

Insulation, you could consider installing cavity wall insulation or roof insulation. 25 - 40% of heat is lost through the walls and 25% through the roof. Installing both will signifigantly reduce your annual heating and air con bills and you should beable to recoup the cost within 1 to 3 years. This will save about 2-3 tonnes of Co2 per year. The cost is about $750, but grants are available, some up to 100% of the cost.

Purchase local produce and use tap water not bottled, not only does this support the local economy it also reduces the carbon emissions from food transport, which accounts for about 19% of all emissions.

The average household wastes $76 in stand-by a year, turn your appliances off when not in use.

Reduce your heating thermostat by 1 degree can reduce your heating bills by 10% per year. Reduce your hot water tank thermostat to 50 degrees, each 5.5 degree reduces you hot water heating cost by 13%. Put a thick insulation jacket on your hot water tank (less than $20), this prevents heat loss from your tank and can save about $20 a year in hot water costs.

If you happen to know of any policies, projects or laws concerning the well being of the environment the government' s considering, press your representatives and your senators!!! Call them about those projects and send them emails.

Shut off everything you're not using. Shutting off your computer overnight can save approximately 930 pounds of CO2 a year, and turning off your air conditioner or heater when not in use will save even more. Think also of the money you'll save. Try to buy less food in plastic or foam containers. Spend less water!! Just, anything you can think of...

shut the lights off in rooms your not using, dont allow water to run when brushing your teeth, recycle, dont leave things plugged in that your not really using at the time (toaster, microwave, coffee maker, etc.) there are many ways to save energy but everyone has to do their part

Change all incandescent light to CFL bulbs. Recycle and compost. Turn out the lights when not in use and keep your thermostat heat at 68F in the winter and A/C @ 75F in the summer. Drive only when necessary, walk when you can.
