Guess you already got your answers, but I'll go ahead and throw in my 2 cents. From my own personal experience with recycling - no, that is unnecessary, unless your city recycling service or recycling center informs you otherwise. If you have a lot of papers to recycle, that would be a bit tedious and time consuming to go through all of them and pull staples.

At home, I do remove the staples before running things through the shredder, though, even though the shredder is supposed to be able to handle them.

no, it's just a waste of time I think.

Staples are a very small portion of the actual paper that is being recycled so it wouldn't really matter.

Not really , those who process such papers have anticipated presence of mechanical material like pins and have a process to remove them.

no, i read an article on recycling plants a while ago and they have machines that remove excess stuff like that. dont waste ur time.

...well here in the recycling, green insanity of the US....the recycle

centers say their machinery picks up metal crud mixed in with paper...

...I sure wouldn't unless you have a quick and painless way to do it...
