My college is holding a competition to make it a greener college, giving away a wii for the best ideas
Ive come up with a few: for example we could set up a Re-use Shop and recycle all those plastic wallets, folders and other things that might otherwise go to landfill. alltho the college is already looking at solar PV roof panelsso cant use that idea

Any ideas from you, for a really good way to make a college greener?

In terms of volumes of stuff and individual involvement campus recycling and some sort of "re-use shop" sounds like the answer. You might even think of starting a campus freecycle.org chapter or, something similar of your own. Of course, addressing the "campus" waste is where you will more readily find quantifiable savings like composting/sending for composting campus food and yard waste, paper recycling, a general collection of metals, etc....Addressing the combined desires for a beautiful campus, organic gardening principles, and selective vegetation is more visible; check out Cisco Morris and Seattle University. But, if you've got some space to put in some raised garden space, particularly if you can open it up for general campus participation, then it is all the more visible and allows for some hands on. You might try limiting vehicles on campus; sometimes providing a bike rental/free use program works well in conjunction. Either way, bike racks and locking bike pods are certainly an option that at least provides opportunity.

- College is a place and time of learning, you might generate a greener present and future with notices of alternatives to plastic, information about the known concerns of plastic, etc.... You might even give some on-campus web space to companies and businesses in the area that are green(ish)(er), a shopping directory, and even the green work of potential furture employers.

i know this sounds dumb but you can try putting recycle bins, put the name of a professor or something like that on each and people get to fill the recycling bin with their favorit teachers name to show they are the best educator.when the week is over whatever professors gets the most recycled stuff in their bins get a special green award .you could also have a special Gift store" that sells ALL recycled material made things and thay each have a recyclin Sign and a sign that represents the collage. If the colldoesn'tesnt already have solar panels you could convince them to run on solar energy too hope i helped out

Classroom lighting, make it automatically turn off when no one is there.

If disposable cups or plates are used anywhere, see if reusable can be substituted.

Start a web page on the school site, so that anyone who wants to put stuff up for free can do it, before throwing it away. Kind of like freecycle or craigslist, but just for the college. Maybe that's what you meant by re-use shop.

Compost food waste with vermiculture.

Compostable napkins and utensils.

Hall lights in dorms turn off automatically when no one is there.

Distribute textbooks by Kindle, Nook, or similar devices. Distribute assignments by web. Turn in assignments by web.

Some classes given over the web to cut down on people driving to class.

Prohibit personal heaters in dorm rooms. Size circuit breakers in rooms so that they will blow if someone tries to use 1500 watts. Hair drying can happen in bathrooms, ironing in the laundry room.

Individual electric meters on dorm rooms. Use less, save more.

Less meat, more locally grown food in the dining hall.

Recycle fryer cooking oil into biodiesel for university vehicles.

You could suggest banning plastic bags at the bookstore and other campus shops (and have them sell re-usable bags), or you could suggest that the cafeteria/food court only use washable dishes or cardboard take-out containers.

Also, having bins besides the garbage for paper, cans/bottles, and newspaper are always good.

Maybe setting up a car-pool program with links on the college website for students and teachers as well! Good luck!
