Most paper recycling facilities can handle window envelopes. No special treatment is needed, just include them with your other recyclable papers.

I usually just put the whole envelope in the paper recycling bin, out of interest I actually went on to our council's website and it doesn't actually say anything about windowed envelopes. I can understand the plastic film in cardboard packaging not be recycled and I do remove this. If they did say you couldn't recycle windowed envelopes then I would probably just throw the whole thing in the rubbish bin or on the fire

A is the correct answer of what you are supposed to do. However many of the windows are glued in and don't just tear out easily. You would have to cut every single window out by hand with scissors. So instead I just throw the envelope through the paper shredder and then dump the shredded paper into the paper recycling bin.

Who on earth cares - just throw them in the bin and do something more important with the time saved

Allegedly the windows are made of cellophane and should therefore be recyclable as paper. However, I do tear each and every one out before recycling as the local council hires sorters who share a brain cell between them. If they spot a set number of "wrong" items per squared metre on the conveyor belt they reject that consignment and send it to landfill for which the council gets fined. There have been numerous complaints about incorrect rejections due to stupidity so I do my best to idiot-proof my rubbish.
